The Good Samaritan Care Clinic on U.S. 60 in Mtn. View has provided medical and dental care to more than 30,000 people from 28 counties since it opened its doors almost 15 years ago.
During his almost 40 years of practicing medicine – 37 years at Mercy Clinic in Mtn. View and two years at Mercy Hospital prior to retirement – Winona resident Dr. Jon Roberts, medical director of the clinic, said he saw a desperate need in the communities he served.
Patients were falling through the cracks of the healthcare system.
These patients couldn’t afford insurance. They didn’t qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. And most didn’t qualify for veteran’s assistance.
Instead of looking the other way or simply feeling badly about their circumstances, Roberts decided to take action.
In 2003, he asked the people of Mtn. View and the surrounding area for support in opening a free clinic to those unable to afford healthcare any other way.
The community responded and the clinic opened its doors in February 2004, in a house loaned to the clinic by Mercy St. Francis Hospital in Mtn. View.
The first year the clinic provided assistance in 510 medical visits.
