SIKESTON — Convenience stores in Sikeston are being warned: if they are selling products containing the main mind-altering ingredient found in marijuana to immediately stop — or they will be charged with a felony offense.
“We were made aware of an investigation by the SEMO Drug Task Force about a gummy product containing THC being sold at a local convenience store, and they’re working a case on that,” said Sikeston Department of Public Safety Assistant Chief James McMillen.
THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main mind-altering ingredient found in the Cannabis plant, or marijuana. The products being sold contain the THC oil mixed in with the gummy candy, McMillen explained.
“THC is the ingredient in marijuana that causes the ‘high,’” McMillen said. “The manufacturers of these products get the oils that contain the THC and put them in gummy candy or vapors or any products they want to have that active ingredient.”
These products actually contain cannabidiols, or CBD, which are both natural and synthetic. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration extracts of marijuana are treated as Schedule I controlled substances.
“CBD is a naturally occurring in the cannabis, or marijuana, plant,” McMillen said. “The law has listed the synthetic CBD as an equivalent to the CBD that naturally occurs in the cannabis plant,” McMillen said.
