LARGO — Police have identified the man who was fatally shot after a “violent, explosive situation” involving two officers on Friday night.
Police say Linus F. Phillip, 30, was killed in the altercation at a Wawa gas station at 1215 Missouri Ave. N that left an officer injured.
According to police, the episode started just before 6 p.m. Largo police Officers Matthew Steiner and Prentice Ables pulled over a black Nissan sedan driven by Phillip at the gas station due to illegally tinted windows.
During what was described as a “polite” conversation, a witness told police, the officers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said.
As officers tried to detain him, Phillip jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to flee, police said.
Steiner, a seven-year veteran, fired into the car in self-defense as he was trapped half in the car and being dragged after Phillip put it in reverse and accelerated, police said.
“At the time, the officer felt he was in peril for his own life and took action,” said Largo police Lt. Randall Chaney at a news conference held later Friday at police headquarters.
