A Valparaiso University basketball player and a fellow student were arrested over the weekend after police responded to a report of marijuana at an apartment near campus, records show.
Micah Bradford, of Bourbonnais, Ill., and Nailah Bush, of Chicago, both 19, were each charged Tuesday with visiting a common nuisance and possession marijuana, both misdemeanors, Porter County court records show.
Officers were dispatched at 9:12 p.m. Saturday to the 200 block of Sturdy Road in Valparaiso “in reference to the odor of marijuana in the common area of the apartment complex,” according to a Valparaiso police report.
Police knocked on the door of the apartment the smell reportedly came from and an officer “could hear at least two voices in the apartment talking,” the report states.
The officer brought in his K-9 “to perform a sniff of the apartment doors” and the dog went to the door the officer had knocked on before.
“I again attempted to obtain an answer at this door, but again, negative results,” the officer said in the report.
The officer obtained a search warrant, the report states.
Using a key from obtained from maintenance staff, the officer went inside and found two people in a bedroom, according to the report. Bradford and Bush said “they were sleeping” and “had no knowledge of marijuana use
